How to Prepare for a 15-Minute Online Notary Appointment

A practical checklist to prevent delays during a remote online notarization appointment.

Before you book

First, ask the organization receiving the document whether it accepts remote online notarization. Review the document for blank spaces, witness requirements, and instructions. A notary verifies identity and performs the requested notarial act, but cannot select the act, interpret the document, or advise you how to complete it.

  • Confirm remote notarization is acceptable.
  • Find out whether witnesses are required.
  • Keep the signature area unsigned until the live session.

Set up your device

Use a phone, tablet, or computer with a dependable camera, microphone, and internet connection. Close unnecessary apps, allow camera and microphone access, and choose a quiet, well-lit space. Keep your face and identification visible when requested.

Have these items within reach

A little preparation keeps a short appointment from becoming a long troubleshooting session.

  • The complete electronic document.
  • An acceptable unexpired government-issued ID or passport.
  • Your payment confirmation and appointment email.
  • Any witnesses required by the document or receiving party.
  • Contact information for the document recipient if an acceptance question arises.

During the session

Follow the platform prompts and the notary's instructions. You may be asked to state that you understand and are signing willingly, take an oath or affirmation, or acknowledge a signature, depending on the notarial certificate. Do not leave the video session until the notary confirms the process is complete.
